April 22-23, 1934: Flagstaff trip—Spring festival. I attended with Glee Club, orchestra.
April 23, 1934: Mother went to Tucson to attend a State Child Welfare Conference.
May 22, 1934: Max Butler’s birthday. They left for Provo today. Cooked for Aunt Louise’s family (Uncle Jess).
May 30, 1934: Memorial Day. Terribly windy. We decorated the groves. Helen Lehan came up from Tucson to spend the summer with us.
May 31, 1934: Joyce Avery fell from an upstairs window. Suffered a brain concussion and died. She was about 5 years old. Aldon Smith had a ruptured appendix—was operated in the Winslow hospital May 29. He is terribly sick. The women in town had a special prayer meeting for him.
June 3, 1934: Seminary caught on fire. Sophia sent the word to us.
June 17, 1934: Received word “Auntie” Aunt Della died at 7:30 pm in Mesa
June 19, 1934: All relatives here for funeral. I tended babies. Everyone here for dinner- Aunt Mary and family and Uncle Henry stayed at our house. Surely like Aunt Mary’s kids.
June 24, 1934: Crowd went up to Hoyts for supper and games. Next day- took cows to pasture, waded in creek, picked currants along the field on the way back.
June 27, 1934: Set out tomato and cabbage plants. We irrigated today. Played in water on lawn in afternoon we went to the field to pick currants.
June 28, 1934: Cleaned the old bank building for Dr. Tweed- a Tucson dentist the Stake Relief Society is bringing in. School will pay part, parents part and R.S. the rest.
June 30, 1934: Funeral for Reed Tenney. The young people in our corner of town played “Run Sheep Run” out by our street light.
July 11, 1934: End of Summer Music course. Rode horse-back with Marion Smith and Fast Flake.
July 15, 1934: Had three teeth filled—my first. Carl Pirce accidentally shot himself while cleaning his gun.
July 24-25, 1934: Boys slumber party on our lawn. Marion, Fast, Chick, Dan Smith, Rex, …
July 31, 1934: Camping trip with family at Adair Springs and Pinetop.
August 8-14, 1934: Mr. and Mrs. Leham came to get Helen. It has been a wonderful summer of fun. Spent the next several days in Joseph City visiting. On August 14 Dad and mother came by and took me to Flagstaff to the pageant “The Legion of the Great Peaks”.
August 17, 1934: Received 1 st Prize on my canned peaches in 4-H. Lois Benson, Aunt Daphne Dalton and Aunt Edna were here visiting.
August 21, 1934: BIG SMITH REUNION. I served tables, played in the orchestra. Played the part of Aunt Daphne Dalton in the pageant. King Udall was present. All the girls are crazy about him. Met my cousin Kenneth Monson.
August 25, 1934: The irrigation board received a loan. The town celebrated with bells ringing etc…
August 26, 1934: Stake Conference- our visitors were: George Albert Smith, Mrs. Beegle, May Anderson, two MIA men- Brother Beadford stayed at our place.
August 28, 1934: Mayola and Dr. Heywood are touring the small towns giving vaccination shots. I went with them to Bourton, Linden, Pinedale. Leon Magee came from Chicago to see Mayola.
September 4, 1934: Dad and Mother purchased a new Studebaker. Mother took us to Pinedale on a R.S. visit. It was slick. Mayola goes to Tucson to the U of A.
September 6, 1934: Registration- Hyrum A. Hendrickson is one of the new teachers.
October 3, 1934: Lois Hunt and Arlo Hunt wedding reception. Home project-fixing up upstairs.
October 13, 1934: Roscoe received 1 st and 2 nd prize on his calf at the future farmers fair.
October 14, 1934: Orrin Kartchner’s golden wedding
October 29, 1934: Took my primary class down to Lorenzo Rogers to see little boy who had died. Max Bulter has a “crush” on Guida. Little Decker boy died.
October 30, 1934: Daddy wrecked his car but wasn’t hurt. He was hit.
November 7, 1934: Little Lilly Bushman died as the result of burns. That is three children out of my class. (I was at the Bushman home when the child died. I’ll never forget it. Phoebe was so heartbroken. It was the first time I had ever seen anyone pass away.)
November 10, 1934: Wallace Westover returned from his mission. Spoke in church.
November 19, 1934: “Aunt” Belle Flake died today.
December 25, 1934: Christmas with Mayola home from college. She has so many pretty clothes.
April 12, 1935: “I won’t have a Prom Dress. We have decorated the gym as a Spanish Garden. It’s beautiful. I worked hard.
April 13, 1935: Received word Curtis Bushman was killed. Gave a 2 ½ minute talk for Loretta Bigler who was in an auto accident which knocked out her front teeth.
April 14, 1935: Worked over to Phoebe Bushman’s all day. I cried.
April 15, 1935: Gave a Primary Easter Party.
April 18, 1935: Curtis Bushman funeral. I stayed with all the children.
May 1, 1935: Snowed all day.
May 3, 1935: Mother gave Rex Rogers and wife, Audrey a reception. Alumni program.
May 7, 1935: I’m in charge of the music for the seminary pageant.
May 11, 1935: Baked bread and ironing for Phoebe Bushman. Helped mother with seminary graduation dress.
May 12, 1935: Conference Seminary Pageant “The Arm of the Lord”—very good.
May 15, 1935: Nearing end of school year—sang “Morning” in assembly.
May 24, 1935: Commencement exercises. Zelda had her fortune over at Brother Murray’s.
June 3, 1935: Attended a conference for 4-H’ers in Tucson. Went with Bro. Fillerup. Met Mayola’s boyfriend, Frank Prince. A little 4-H boy was drown and so the rest of the program was postponed. Met Lee Garret. It’s hot in Tucson.
June 5-12 1935 Dad sent down the car for Mayola to drive home. I stayed down and came home with her

June 28, 1935: Aunt Fern has a new roomer—Jack Klieman, works with Social Service. He has taken a liking to Mayola. They have had lots of dates.
Shirley Temple is a great movie star now. Saw her in “Bright eyes”
June 30, 1935: Lester Porter has been coming up from Joseph City to see me.
July 7, 1935: Stake Conference—Apostle Lyman is visitor. Had dinner with us. Jack also ate with us.
July 15, 1935: Primary—had 30 little children.
August 4, 1935: Sang in church “God’s Garden”. Jack is over nearly every day. We all like him. Helped Mayola gather silverware for M. Men Gleaner banquet.
August 5, 1935: Lee Garrett coming to visit Mayola.
August 9, 1935: Gigantic M. Men Gleaner convention. Some 300-400 young people attended from stakes all over Arizona. Mayola returned silverware. We had 18 guests. Sister Evans and Sister Kimball among them.
August 16, 1935: Roscoe spent a week with the scouts in San Diego.
August 25, 1935: Mother, Mayola, Jack and I went to the Indian Snake Dance. The roads were terribly slick. We didn’t get home until late in the night.
September 3, 1935: Registered for my senior year of high school. Dan, Jack’s brother, came up with him.
September 18, 1935: Mayola left for New Orleans today to attend Tulane University where she will work toward her Masters Degree. It has been so hard for her to part with Jack. They are so in love. We all cried at the party. Jack came for supper.
September 23, 1935: So lonesome without Mayola. Jack is now in Holbrook. Roswell Willard keeps up busy with the Pepperette practices.
October 5, 1935: Movie “Les Miserable”. Bishop Hendricksen asked me to bare my testimony.
October 8, 1935: Mother gave me a surprise birthday party and a Book of Mormon. Age 16.
October 21, 1935: Music program. Mr. Crandall has a wonderful women’s chorus called the “Del Musica Club”
October 25, 1935: Faithful to my choir duties. Tried out for the school play.
November 28, 1935: Lonesome without Mayola home for thanksgiving. Aunt Fern and Aunt Louis’ family put their dinners together and ate at our house. Ward dance at night.
November 30, 1935: Jack brought his girl, Betty Webster, to meet us. It was a terrible blow. We have lost him. All of us feel terrible we loved him so.
December 5, 1935: Mother has so much Relief Society typing. I’ve been trying to help her.
December 7, 1935: Oscar A. Kirkham present for a scout meeting.
December 15, 1935: Del Musica Club presented a Christmas program. Typed Grandma’s biography. 100 pages.
December 24, 1935: Decorated house and cleaned it. Decorated tree. Went caroling.
December 25, 1935: Mayola didn’t get home for Christmas. Our family are lonesome without her. Received pictures of Mayola. Lots of college kids home for the holidays.
December 31, 1935: Went to New Years Eve Carnival Ball. Went with Elwin.
January 2, 1936: Mother, dad, and Carl Bushman and I went out for wood. I worked hard. Washed car. Budget dance. LEAP year.
April 2, 1936: Left for Flagstaff. I’ve been terribly hoarse all week. Hope I can sing my song—the girls’ high voice solo. Didn’t sleep a wink all night I was so excited.
April 3, 1936: All I did all day was tremble, but when I got up to sing my song, I wasn’t one bit afraid (my prayers were answered). I felt that I sang fairly well. It was a thrilling experience. The next day I found out I had placed second. A Flagstaff girl won first. I was happy about it though.
April 13, 1936: Mother is still very sick. She lies in the dining room couch and tells us what to do. I’ll be glad when she is better. The home isn’t the same when she is sick. It was Easter yesterday and beautiful weather. I gave my Primary class a party.
April 16, 1936: Varena and I are working very hard on our Senior project.—History of Navajo County—see page 52.
April 27, 1936: Went to Flagstaff with Varena, Robert S., Charles Jennings, and Smith Broadbent to take a course in the use of a mimeograph.
April 30, 1936: Work, work, work on that book is all I know. I have it about all blocked-typed and stenciled. Roscoe was in the Freshy class play. Brother Fish and Margaret are correcting them (the stencils). Found lots of mistakes. It has been discouraging to me.
May 6, 1936: Worked until 11pm on the yearbook. We finished running off the stencils. Surely tired. Next day we worked all day until 10pm to get the book finished. It’s great to have it completed. The next morning I went to Mesa with Varena and Brother Fish to get my graduation dress.
May 11, 1936: Practice at the Sinks everyday. Practice, practice. Beowulf is getting me down. May 10—Sunday—Seminary Pageant. Stake Conference.
May 14, 1936: Honor day. I went up 7 times—received one letter, one lyre, a pin, a certificate, and five honor ribbons. I’m the fourth highest in the school. I’m pretty thrilled about it.
May 15, 1936: Alumni Dance. Went with Elder Armstrong.
May 17, 1936: Baccalaureate exercises. Fred Turley gave the address. Dad offered a beautiful prayer.
May 18-22, 1936: Practice at Sinks—we’re all sunburned and tired. I have charge of the music. Also had charge of decorating the King’s throne. I was a minstrel. The pageant was Thursday night. Graduation May 22, 1936—Friday. I had a pink and blue dress—(very dainty) Went to the graduation dance with Ned Armstrong. Jack Klienman came—gave me a 5-year diary for graduation.
May 22, 1936: Van Smith slipped and fell in the bathtub. Mother went to Phoenix to be with him. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Fife from New Orleans visited us.
May 28, 1936: Theda Willis’s reception. She married Carol Sherwood.
May 30, 1936: Memorial Day. Visited graveyard. Set out cabbage plants. Windy.
June 1, 1936: Inez and Mark Gardner’s wedding reception. Have a job at Uncle Jess’s office at $15 per month.
June 3, 1936: Mayola returned from New Orleans. We’re all so happy.
June 5, 1936: M. Men Gleaner Convention in Safford. Ned, Elwin, Leonore, Louise and Genevieve Farmer went together. Had an informal dance, mid-night show. Terribly hot. The next day, we had a Spanish breakfast, a swimming party and banquet at night, then formal dance. Visited the Red Knolls. Stayed in private homes. A wonderful time.
June 10, 1936- Mayola spent the day telling me about New Orleans- and Red. Her boyfriend. He sounds exciting.
June 12, 1936- Jack came to see Mayola. They have spent the past few days together. He is here constantly. Mayola left for Phoenix where she is taking a job. The job is in Douglas.
June 18, 1936- Dad’s birthday. All his brothers and sister had supper at the Creek to celebrate.
June 25, 1936- Luise is spending a few days in Taylor at Aunt Margaret’s. Met Russell Hakes. He is a truck-driver for the Smith-Heywoods trucks. He is staying at Aunt Fern’s. Francis Ballard and Stanley Shumway’s reception. Ben Heywood is spending a few days here.
July 10, 1936- Swimming with Melvin Fish, Varena, Weston Tennay, and Lorna. It’s a mud-hole at John T’s. Show “Desire” Gary Cooper, Marlene Detrick Evans came up and went. Ben went back to Phoenix. July 16- Music recital. I sang “Homing”. We received a new bike.
July 24, 1936 – Governor Mocur visited Snowlake. Stayed at our home. Our crowd is constantly together- Maria, Guida, Van, Chic, Rex, Fast, Marion, Vareena. (Paul and Evans Heywood returned home to Phoenix July 29)
July 30, 1936- Walter Fife and wife and sister Martha came through on their way to New Orleans. They spent several days with us.
August 22, 1936 Had Loise, Guida, Thelma, and Maria to supper. Ned was here also. Aunt Thora is visiting us. Primary. Roscoe has a paper route.
August 6, 1936- Luella’s birthday. Went to a party.
August 9, 1936 – Maria and Marion’s birthday. Their mother gave them a dinner party. I delivered Roscoe’s papers. Went bike riding with Guida.
August 16, 1936- Had a supper on our lawn. Went on a corn roast with LaPriel Rogers, Art Hayte, Max Butler, Flake Rogers, Jeff Hunt and our girlfriends.
August 19, 1936 – Delivered papers—nearly everyday. Picked pears. Aunt Ellen and Uncle Silas Smith’s 50 th Wedding dance. Three of their children celebrated their silver weddings.
August 24 1936. Took Aunt Thora to Holbrook to the train. Went swimming up at Rock Wall. Getting ready for school. Will go the the U of A.
August 27, 1936- Stake Conference. Sister Barker was our visitor. Jack visited us.
August 30, 1936- Supper at Vareena’s. Brother Fish and Luise Tenney told us about Samoa.
August 31, 1936 – Went to Florence Junction with Miss Thayer—a social worker. Then took the bus to Douglas where Mayola was working. Spent the week with Mayola shopping etc…
September 7, 1936 – Jack and Mayola and Dan ( Jack’s brother) all went on a picnic above McNary. Mother and I are busy washing, ironing, and sewing getting me ready for school.
September 11, 1936- Left for school. It was hard to leave home. I went to Mesa with Lee Johnson-stayed with Guida, then on to Tucson. Mayola met me. I stayed at Lehans that night.
