Welcome to the Family History Workshop on using the internet for researching and sharing your Family History.
Below are some of our favorite resources on the web for researching and sharing. We hope you will come back often and use this as a resource and tool for sharing your own family history.
Family Search-- Contains Ancestral File, International Genealogical Index (for LDS ordinance information), U.S. Social Security Death Index, U.S. Military Index, Scottish Church Records, Family History Library Catalog, and other LDS options (TempleReady and Ordinance Index) available only in Family History Centers.
Ancestry.com-- Contains U.S. Census information and images, U.S. Social Security Death Index, UK Census, a U.S. Immigration Collection, Historical Newspapers, Local and Family Histories, and Discussion Boards (by surname and location) for collaborating with other researchers.
U.S. Genweb Project-- Contains information on family history research resources for every state and county in the U.S. This website is completely free and an excellent resource for contacting county record repositories, and also contains special projects such as gravestone image indexes.
World Genweb Project-- Similar to the U.S. Genweb Project but extending internationally. This site contains a substantial country index containing information on how to submit surname queries and collect information in specific regions.
Cyndi's List-- A comprehensive index for internet links, both national and international resources for finding genealogical information. You can search by key word, alphabetically, topically, or regionally.
Family Search Share-- On this website, you can share your family history information with others by submitting your GEDCOM file to the Pedigree Resource File or Ancestral File through the Family Search website. You can also create collaboration email lists.
Other ways you can share your family history information is by creating email lists or a website so others receive the information as you are ready to share it. In the PAF program, you can easily create a web page containing family and pedigree information to then post on a website. we have an example here.
Another example of using the internet to share family history information is something we have done with Todd's grandma's journals.
